These planes typically have the rounded iron. And speaking of the plane's set, that's exactly what changes whenever the frog is adjusted forward or backward. Schade patented the frog adjustment feature that would initially be used on the Bed Rock planes, and eventually would become a mainstay feature of the Bailey line of planes. It's like they did half the work, but all for nothing. Top of the frog no longer rounded as before.

This isn't in the original type study - Some of the lever caps can be found with the outline of the sweetheart logo cast into the backside. The two screws apply a downward force on the pins when they are tightened, thus locking the frog securely in position. Some folks swear they're the best ever.

This in my native England. The brass adjusting nut now has a left-hand thread. The screw holes are located in the grooves. They all have an adjustable frog, the brass depth adjustment knob, the lateral lever, a lever cap, rosewood knob and tote, etc.

How Many Patent Dates do you see behind the handplane frog

This is to align the frog laterally, to keep it square to the sides of the plane, and, thus, make the iron parallel to the mouth. Be careful for counterfeit corrugations on this one. The frog now has an ogee-shape s-shape to the back, what's the most on either side of the lateral adjustment lever.

The Bed Rocks can also show damage about the frog clamping screws - sometimes you can find them with their slots broken in which case you'll need to find replacements. By giving the screw a turn, the frog moved either forward or backward. Notify me of new posts via email. For a detailed look at Shaw's patent, click here. The nut has a right-hand thread.

Where the casting rises up around the frog, on either side of the frog, the tops are lopped off flat, instead of the normal round sides found on the earlier Bed Rocks and the Baileys. Email Address never made public. Post was not sent - check your email addresses! It is is the larger if the two.

  1. Again, not found in the original type study - it's about this time that the backs of the cap iron are no longer blued, but are just finished like the fronts, with nothing.
  2. Its iron is stamped with the first sweetheart trade- mark.
  3. You take your pick on a theory here.
  4. The frog and the Bottom are so perfectly fitted together, that from the Plane Iron to the Bottom, the Plane is as one solid piece of metal.
  5. This is likely the mark of the Sessions Foundry, who contracted with Stanley to produce their castings.

Bedrock Bench Planes

This isn't listed in the book I reference, but every example of these early planes I've examined has it. This is to stem the splitting of the knob, about its base, dating which was a very common thing to occur. Flat head screws now hold the frog in place. Hardwood totes and knobs are now finished with a light colored stain.

  • Why it was done is unknown.
  • You'll never regret it as they far out-perform any Bed Rock plane.

  • Please note that all type studies are approximate as production variations throughout the manufacturing years were quite common.
  • The frog has a rounded back the top of it where it faces the tote.

Each of these screws is pointed on the end without the slot and engages two pins which have a corresponding conical depressions milled into them. Additionally, the Bed Rocks originally featured the frog adjustment mechanism that was patented by Schade on Sep. The toe now has a raised, broad, flat rib cast into it.

On other examples, neither hole is tapped. For a short while, some models had a nickel plated appearance on them as a finish rather than the usual black japanning. By relocating the circular hole toward the bottom of the cutter, the iron can be used right up to the slot, without sacrificing the advantage gained from the lateral adjustment lever. The lateral lever is a one-piece construction, with its portion that engages the slot in the iron being straight across.

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Stanley Bed Rock Planes

Can you hazard a guess on date of make. This plane is one of the scarcest of the entire Bed Rock series. In other words, the frog does not mate with the bottom casting over the entire area of the frog's bottom.

The bottom casting has a sloped and machined area onto which the frog seats, for its entire length. The original type study doesn't mention this - It's about this time that the brass nuts used to secure the knob and tote to the rods undergo a change. Either that, or someone sabotaged Stanley's orange paint supply. Adjusting the frog forward increases the set, and adjusting it backward decreases the set. And, to make matters worse, some of the examples have the standard features rosewood, funny dating profile taglines brass of the previous type in conjunction with some of the features of this type.

The back of the lever cap is recessed. The type study doesn't mention this, but my experience tells me that nickel plated lever caps went belly-up during the war. Pay attention to this, and the corrugated version's, iron. This was probably an attempt to make interchangable parts for most of the bench planes, instead of having a frog sized for each size of plane.

Bedrock Bench Planes

Apparently there was a dispute over the Schade patent, because those sold for the first year or two have the Sept. Rosewood knob is shaped like a hot air balloon, and has a distinct bead turned into its base. These planes are, for all intents and purposes, nothing but a variation of the more popular Bailey series.

The third major change was the addition of a raised receiver for the front knob, and the transition from the low knob to the high knob. The knurling on the brass depth adjuster is now parallel on most examples. Where in the sequence of actual manufacturing this subtle change fits is unknown to me, laguna beach dating but I've only noticed it on those planes equipped with rosewood knobs and totes and rounded irons. My observations tell me that any combination of the following features is possible for these planes. Check eBay for recent selling prices.

The Superior Works - Stanley Blood & Gore Planes

Understand that neither Stanley nor any other manufacturer followed type studies. The frog receiver is now a broad, rectangular area, with an arched rear the portion nearest the tote. Bed Rocks were slightly heavier planes with slightly greater mass. The entire lever cap is entirely nickel plated, including the background of the notched rectangle.

What I can read on one of the ornate knobs is Stanley Rule. Rarer, perhaps, but not more desirable. Could you give me more info to this and how old it may be?

This is an area where the type study is very weak, in my opinion. The back of the lever cap is solid and has a banjo-shaped spring. You can buy one yourself by clicking here. Frog receiver has two shallow grooves, parallel to the plane's sides, cast into it.
